Instrument Rating: Workbook

Workbook Format

The Instrument Rating Workbook is a ring-bound, letter-size workbook as shewn in the picture below. This format allows the book to be opened flat on a table for making notes.

The workbook is available in a student edition without hints and answers and also in an instructor edition with teaching hints and answers for the more complex questions. The workbook is in two parts:

  1. Over 500 structured and sequenced questions relating to IFR flight and the syllabus for the Transport Canada IFR written examination. These questions can be worked privately by a student or used in to structure classroom teaching. Farmhall Aviation Training instructors, when presenting the IFR groundschool use these questions to confirm the students' knowledge before passing on to a new topic and, in many cases, to stimulate class discussion.
  2. A list, with answers, of many questions commonly asked during IFR flight tests. It is suggested that this list be reviewed by students immediately before an initial IFR flight test or the biennial renewal.

The cost of the workbook and sample pages can be found here.

Additional Materials

The IFR workbook is largely self-contained but, in order to use it, you will need access to a recent Canada Flight Supplement (CFS), a Toronto VNC chart, a LO5/6 LO-altitude en route chart, the Ontario section of the Canada Air Pilot, the Canada Air Pilot general pages and some form of aviation calculator such as an ASA CX-2. These materials can be obtained from any pilot shop.

An analogue E6B sliderule, while of some historical interest, is strongly not recommended, either for completing the groundschool portion of the course or for use in an examination.
