Student Support Service

Students will typically look to their groundschool and flight instructors for support when they need more explanation of a topic or do not understand an answer given in a book of sample questions. Farmhall Aviation Training recognises, however, that this may not always be possible: perhaps the student is geographically separated from the instructor, perhaps the instructor has departed to take a job with the airlines.

For circumstances such as this, Farmhall Aviation Training offers a personalised tutorial service by email. The student can send specific questions by email to a tutor at Farmhall Aviation Training and get a personalised response. The cost of this service can be found on the "costs and ordering" page.

This option is not intended to replace formal groundschool teaching and general questions (e.g., "can you explain weather?") are obviously not supported. In the past this service has answered many specific questions including:

  • I don't understand the position of the CDI needle when flying outbound for the procedure turn on a localiser backcourse approach. Can you explain whether I should fly towards or away from the needle?
  • I am confused by when it is legally required to file a flight plan for IFR flight, particularly when part of the flight is in uncontrolled airspace. Can you please explain?
  • I am still unsure about the forces acting on an aircraft in a banked turn. Why is the aircraft not in equilibrium during the turn?
  • In what order is it best to consult weather reports and forecasts when deciding whether or not to depart on a flight?
  • I do not agree with the answer to question X in the Canadian Commercial Pilot
    Answer Guide.
I think the answer should be Y because of Z. Do you agree?
  • When is FL180 not used and why?

In general, questions beginning "why?" are not suitable: "why does Transport Canada do X?", "why is regulation Y in place?".

This student support service is available to any student who has directly or indirectly (e.g., through a flight school) purchased a copy of at least one of the Farmhall Aviation Training Workbooks.
