Farmhall Aviation Training

Farmhall Aviation Training helps flight schools in Canada train the most professional commercial and instrument pilots in the world.

Farmhall Aviation Training recognises that many flight schools face difficulties in creating and consistently delivering high quality groundschools:

  1. In many flight schools, groundschool instructors are qualified flight instructors with little or no experience of classroom teaching. Teaching knowledge in a classroom requires techniques different from those needed to teach skills in an aircraft.
  2. As recruitment in the airline industry accelerates, many instructors are leaving at short notice after relatively short periods of instructing and this leads to discontinuities in groundschool teaching.
  3. With the multi-crew licence becoming more common, fewer students on their way to a jet cockpit will be using the conventional route of private pilot → commercial pilot → flight instructor, resulting in fewer flight instructors.
  4. Many flight instructors working as groundschool instructors are themselves relatively inexperienced as pilots, having only recently acquired a Commercial Pilot licence with Instructor Rating. This means that, in some cases, their own knowledge of the examination topics is limited and their experience of which parts of the syllabus are important for safety rather than examination purposes is weak.

The course workbooks and syllabus suggestions from Farmhall Aviation Training have been written by experienced pilots, have been honed in groundschools with students of different experience levels and are designed to help a relatively inexperienced groundschool instructor offer a professional course. The existence of the workbooks and syllabus provide continuity for a flight school should an instructor leave and have to be replaced during a course.

Farmhall Aviation Training was founded by Chris Hobbs. Chris is a mathematician by training and a telecommunications engineer by profession. He flies from Rockcliffe Airport (CYRO) in Ottawa, Ontario and has taught various groundschool classes, at the Private and Commercial Pilot levels and for the Instrument Rating, at Rockcliffe for many years. The texts and syllabuses offered by Farmhall Aviation Training are based on the experiences of Chris and others in actually delivering groundschool training. Chris has held a flight instructor rating but is currently not an active flight instructor, finding groundschool instruction more interesting and rewarding.
